The President of the Municipality of Tivat welcomed the students and spoke with them

The President of the Municipality of Tivat, Željko Komnenović, hosted students from Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who are on a multi-day visit to Montenegro and the Balkans as part of the study programme “Balkan Trek”.

“Tivat is one of the fastest-growing destinations in the region,” said Komnenović while welcoming around 50 American students. “Although geographically the smallest coastal municipality, whose modern history began with a military shipyard, Tivat is now home to some of the most significant investment projects in Montenegro. All of this has contributed to Tivat being selected as the host of the European Union – Western Balkans Summit on June 5, from which a message will be sent regarding Montenegro as the 28th member state of the European Union.”

The students asked the President of the Municipality questions mainly concerning the impact of geopolitical developments on the growth of tourism in Tivat and the region, the relationship of the local community towards foreign investments, and the preservation of space amid intensive construction. In his responses, the President emphasized that Tivat strives to find a balance between enabling the city’s development while preserving the quality of life and protecting space as its most valuable resource.

During the day, the Harvard and MIT students will visit Kotor, take a boat ride through the Bay of Kotor, and ride the Kotor–Lovćen cable car, after which they will continue their journey through Montenegro and the region.
