20 Mar 2026

The Municipality of Tivat has secured funding for another IPA project within the European cross-border cooperation programme Interreg IPA South Adriatic Area Italy–Albania–Montenegro. The project, titled “Decarbonisation of Small Boats in the South Adriatic Sea” (DECAR BOATS), is aimed at reducing harmful gas emissions in maritime transport through the transition of small vessels to electric propulsion.

The total value of the DECAR BOATS project amounts to €1,139,077.78, while €178,038.00 has been allocated to the Municipality of Tivat.

The overall objective of the project is the decarbonisation of maritime transport in the South Adriatic region through the implementation of sustainable solutions, including the use of small electric-powered vessels and the integration of renewable energy sources. In this way, the project contributes to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, improving air quality, and strengthening the sustainable development of coastal communities.

Within the framework of this project, the Municipality of Tivat will procure an electric-powered speedboat as well as an electric charging station.

Upon completion of the procurement process, the electric speedboat will be assigned for use and management to the Municipal Utility Company of Tivat, which will utilize it for activities within its jurisdiction.

As part of the project, the Municipality of Tivat will also cooperate with a Montenegrin partner — the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor.

The lead partner of the project is the Participation Foundation DHITECH – HIGH-TECH, while other partners, in addition to the Faculty from Kotor, include the Technological District (Italy), the Higher Technological Institute for Mobility Ge.In.Logistic (Italy), LAG Coastal Molise (Italy), and Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës (Albania).
