Free Internet at Magnolia Square for Citizens and Visitors

At Magnolia Square in Tivat, the launch of the WiFi4WB initiative was officially marked today, providing this coastal town with free, fast, and reliable public internet at one of its central locations.

The WiFi4WB initiative is part of the broader EU4Digital project, jointly funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with the aim of accelerating the digital transformation of the region. The project is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), which coordinates activities across all six Western Balkan economies. The telecommunications operator One, selected through a public tender conducted by GIZ, is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and provision of internet services.

In the presence of the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, H.E. Johan Sattler, the Mayor of Tivat, Željko Komnenović, and a representative of GIZ signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formally confirming the project’s implementation at the local level. A symbolic “first login” to the WiFi4WB network was also performed at Magnolia Square, marking the official availability of free internet access for both citizens and visitors of Tivat.

Inspired by the success of the EU’s WiFi4EU program, through which more than 7,000 communities across Europe have received free public internet, the WiFi4WB initiative brings similar benefits to the region. In Montenegro, a total of 24 municipalities have been selected for the installation of Wi-Fi access points at key public locations.

Addressing those present, the EU Ambassador to Montenegro emphasized that the WiFi4WB initiative contributes to bringing the Western Balkans closer to European digital standards, thereby supporting Montenegro’s progress in the EU integration process:“The idea is simple – free, secure, and reliable internet in places where people live, learn, and work. This also represents bringing the region closer to the EU’s single market even before accession. By expanding free and public Wi-Fi coverage, we are not only improving connectivity but also creating opportunities for citizens, businesses, and local communities to fully participate in the digital economy. Tivat is an excellent location for this project, given its strategic position and strong development potential.”

The Mayor of Tivat highlighted that this project further enhances the quality of life in the town and its attractiveness as a modern tourist destination:“Tivat records a high number of visitors throughout the year, and in the digital era we live in, good internet is a necessity. Magnolia Square is home to the local government building, numerous hospitality venues, shops, and service businesses, so I believe a large number of citizens and guests will benefit from this free internet connection.”

The WiFi4WB initiative aims to increase digital inclusion, improve access to information and public services, and strengthen regional cooperation and the process of European integration. With today’s symbolic “first login,” Tivat has further reinforced its position as a modern, open, and digitally connected destination.
